Things start heating up with the details on the unsolved case, between Jack and Tim and the brut that’s trying to put a stop to the book.Ī great story from start to finish. Jack isn’t too excited about what’s going with Tim but is grudginly helping. Jack and Tim had gone a few dates about 6 months ago and even had had sex, but when Tim, who is epileptic, had a seizure in bed things cooled off. He asks for assistance from his neighbor Jack, who’s a cop. Unfortunately he’s starting to get warning against finishing the book…like getting pushed down stairs and being held at gunpoint. He just has this wonderful way of mixing the two that gets me every time.Ĭards on the Table was a fabulous story of an author, Tim, who is writing a book about a 50 year old unsolved murder. That man knows how to write! Not only great mystery’s but great relationships. I read Volume 1 this past week and I just loved it. Sure, I’ve read some of Josh’s novellas but of the 9 stories I’d only read 3 of them so this was a great way to get them all at once. I recently purchased both Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Josh Lanyon’s Collected Novella’s. Volume I includes these witty, sexy, and action-packed reader favorites: Like a little murder and mayhem with your man-on-man romance? Award-winning novelist Josh Lanyon’s first ever collectionof short stories and novellas, in two volumes, will keep you turning pages long into the night.

Throughout, Goldberger shows us the way in which baseball's history is concurrent with our cultural history: the rise of urban parks and public transportation the development of new building materials and engineering and design skills. In the changing locations and architecture of our ballparks, Goldberger reveals the manifestations of a changing society: the earliest ballparks evoked the Victorian age in their accommodations - bleachers for the riffraff, grandstands for the middle-class the "concrete donuts" of the 1950s and '60s made plain television's grip on the public's attention and more recent ballparks, like Baltimore's Camden Yards, signal a new way forward for stadium design and for baseball's role in urban development. From the earliest corrals of the mid-1800s (Union Grounds in Brooklyn was a "saloon in the open air"), to the much mourned parks of the early 1900s (Detroit's Tiger Stadium, Cincinnati's Palace of the Fans), to the stadiums we fill today, Paul Goldberger makes clear the inextricable bond between the American city and America's favorite pastime. This “medicalization of childbirth” has huge impacts on how society, and women themselves, see women’s bodies and safety. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press. Catching Babies: The Professionalization of Childbirth, 1870- 1920.Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press. The medicalized model of childbirth is a fairly recent product of a larger shift in societal acceptance of professional science over local knowledge. The media often frames this increase in home births as potentially dangerous and problematic, but women were giving birth at home long before they started going to hospitals. Kunis is just one, albeit highly publicized, instance in a larger move away from the hospitalized birthing experience to “home birth.” However, this shift is not without its conflicts, and Kunis’ statement that natural birth is “doing it right” points to deeper societal perceptions of the right way to give birth and how those perceptions of what is “natural” might be changing. Mila Kunis recently announced that she will be giving birth naturally, saying “I did this to myself – I might as well do it right.” By “natural,” Kunis means that she will be using a midwife when she gives birth and opting out of the hospitalized, medically-induced birthing experience that dominates in American society today. The idealised American Christian hero is represented by the actor John Wayne in his Westerns. That’s the basis for Du Mez’s book title. This also means that the culture is shaped by threat whether from Soviet Communism, Islam or a socially liberal authoritarian state leading to culture wars. Her thesis is that there has been a particular desire amongst evangelicals, a hankering for a culture that is muscular and manly that centres around a type of American Dream nationalism and looks for warrior heroes. It’s an attempt to understand and analyse contemporary evangelicalism in the American context, particularly in the light of trying to understand how evangelicals ended up supporting Donald Trump. The book isn’t simply a neutral retelling of events. I’ve been working through the list and have just completed Du Mez’s book.ĭu Mez is a historian and so her book offers a potted history of 20 th and early 21 st Century American Evangelicalism. It’s also one of the books mentioned by Jonathan Leeman in article about deconstruction. One of the big hitter books of the last year has been Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez. |
